What type of products do you recommend for installation?

First….

RJ McGrath does not install anything that has not been sold in the industry for at least 2 years. This is after all of the field tests are done and the product is in full production. That’s if we even like the product or need a reason to change. We are very pickey. We see new products at trade shows and in trade magazines and we certainly want to stay on top of the state of the art products, BUT….. Often times the field tests are done during the introduction of a product into the industry. This makes the contractor and homeowner the testers for the product. I have seen over the years manufacturers giving away free product to sprinkler contractors and saying “try our new product and let us know what you think.” There have been many products we have seen go back to the factories during, and just after, the first year of introduction for updates and improvements. These updates and improvements are actually fixes to problems they had when the product first hit the street.

Second….

In past years there has been no manufacturer who has offered a complete reliable product line. One company may have offered a good controller but no sprinklers or a good valve but unreliable controller. This forced sprinkler contractors to choose the best item from each different manufacturer. This is not the case any more. There are a few, not a lot, manufacturers that offer a complete product line; Heads, Valves, Controllers. When a lawn sprinkler contractor aligns itself with one manufacturer the support they receive from that manufacturer is far superior than if they contractor only buys just their sprinkler heads or just the manufacturers valve etc.

Third….

When choosing a company’s product to install it first of all has to work well. The next thing I look for is user friendliness. Not user friendly to me, the sprinkler guy, but to the person who doesn’t have a clue how to use the product. The home owner. It is actually very easy to figure out who’s product is user friendly. I gage the frienliness based on how many people call me to walk them through programming the controller or adjusting the sprinkler heads themselves. You don’t want to be calling us to ask how to do it, by the time you get around to calling you are beyond frustrated. I will always take the time to walk someone through the process but would really rather be doing something else.
